Alaska light, rendered accurately.

Alaska is the most extreme rendering environment in the United States and nothing about temperate-climate practice transfers. Anchorage gets under six hours of daylight at the winter solstice and over nineteen in summer; Fairbanks is more severe again and Utqiagvik has weeks with no sunrise at all. Snow load, permafrost, frost heave and extreme cold drive elevated foundations, compact forms, arctic entries and steep roofs. A render that shows a bright afternoon in July describes a small fraction of the year.

Anchorage noon sun reaches only about 51° at midsummer and barely 6° at the winter solstice — effectively grazing the horizon, producing shadows hundreds of feet long and hours of extended low golden light. Modelling the real solar position is not a refinement here; it is the only way to be accurate.

Winter air is extremely clear and cold with intense low glare off snow and long blue twilight. Coastal south-east is persistently wet and overcast; ice fog forms in interior valleys at deep cold.

Materials local practices specify.

Building here is governed by cold, snow and ground conditions. Compact forms with minimal surface area, arctic entries and double-door vestibules, deep insulation, steep or carefully managed roofs for snow shed, and foundations raised on piles or adjustable posts to avoid thawing permafrost are all standard and visibly shape the architecture. Materials are chosen for durability: metal cladding and roofing, fibre cement, and heavy timber where available. Southeast Alaska has a distinct wet-climate timber tradition with deep overhangs. Remote and village construction is pragmatic and often modular, and rendering that honestly matters more than dressing it up.

Can you render a six-degree winter sun?

Yes, and for Alaska it is essential. At the Anchorage winter solstice the sun barely reaches 6°, so shadows run hundreds of feet and low golden light lasts for hours. We model the real solar position for your latitude and date, because no generic sky comes close.

Do you show arctic entries and vestibules?

We do. Arctic entries are a functional necessity and they visibly change the massing and entry sequence. Rendering a single flush door where a double vestibule is being built misrepresents the design.

Can you render pile-supported foundations on permafrost?

Yes. Raising a structure on piles or adjustable posts to avoid thawing permafrost is standard practice and highly visible. We resolve the under-structure, skirting and access rather than hiding it.

How does the overnight turnaround work for Alaska?

The studio is well ahead of Alaska time, so end-of-day markups are picked up during our working day and revisions are typically waiting the next morning. The time difference works in your favour rather than against it.
