Colorado is a high-altitude state and altitude changes light in ways that surprise people. At 5,000 to 10,000 feet the atmosphere is thin, so sunlight is more intense, shadows are harder and deeper, and the sky reads a markedly deeper blue. The eastern third is high plains; the rest is genuine mountains with severe snow load, dramatic terrain shadow and short shoulder seasons. Sun is abundant year-round — the state gets a great deal of clear weather even in winter.

Denver noon sun reaches roughly 73° in June and 30° in December, but altitude matters more than angle: thinner air means higher intensity and much deeper shadow contrast than a sea-level site at the same latitude. In the mountains, ridgelines routinely override solar geometry entirely.

Thin dry air gives exceptionally hard shadows, saturated deep-blue skies and very sharp distant peaks. Afternoon convective build-up is routine in summer; winter alternates brilliant clear days with heavy snow.

Mountain modern is the state's signature contemporary idiom — heavy stone bases, timber and steel, dark metal cladding, low-slope or shed roofs, and very large glazing framing a specific peak view. Traditional mountain work runs to log and heavy-timber lodges with deep overhangs for snow. Denver has a substantial brick inheritance — Denver Square houses, brick bungalows, warehouse districts in active conversion — plus a fast-growing modern infill market. Adobe and territorial influence appears in the south around the San Luis Valley. Snow management is architecturally visible everywhere: roof pitch, snow retention, entry protection and drift planning.

A markup you send at the end of your working day in Denver is picked up as our day begins, so a revision round costs you a night rather than a working day. Does altitude actually change how you light a render?

Yes, meaningfully. Thin air at 5,000 to 10,000 feet gives higher sunlight intensity, harder shadow edges, deeper shadow contrast and a noticeably deeper blue sky. A Colorado render lit like a sea-level site looks washed out and subtly wrong.

Do you model ridgeline shadow for mountain sites?

Always. In the Rockies terrain overrides solar geometry — a valley site can lose direct sun hours before sunset. We build surrounding topography as real geometry so siting and glazing decisions rest on truth.

Can you show snow retention and roof shed?

We can, and for mountain work it matters. Snow retention devices, shed direction, drift against walls and protected entries are visible design decisions, and clients at altitude expect to see them resolved.

How do you frame a specific peak view?

We model the actual surrounding terrain from elevation data, so the view through the glazing is the real skyline from that site rather than a generic mountain backdrop. That is usually the point of the whole house.
