Hawaii is the only tropical state and its light is unlike anywhere else in the country. At 19 to 22 degrees north the sun passes almost directly overhead for much of the year and actually crosses to the north in summer, which means north-facing elevations receive direct sun — a condition that catches mainland-trained designers out. Trade winds are constant and architectural, driving cross-ventilation and deep overhangs. Rainfall varies enormously over short distances, from desert-dry leeward coasts to some of the wettest places on earth windward.

Honolulu noon sun exceeds 88° in summer, effectively straight overhead, and the sun tracks north of vertical between roughly May and July so north elevations take direct sun. Even December noon holds near 45°. Deep overhangs and lanai are the entire shading strategy.

High humidity with brilliant clarity between showers; frequent rainbows and fast-moving trade-driven cloud. Vog from volcanic activity can warm and mute light on the Big Island, and salt haze softens coastal distance.

Hawaiian architecture is organised around shade and airflow. The lanai — a deep covered outdoor room — is the central element, along with double-pitched hip roofs, wide overhangs, operable louvres and jalousies, and single-wall or open-frame construction in the older stock. Plantation-era building gives a recognisable idiom of corrugated metal roofs, board-and-batten, raised floors and simple gables in bright colours. Contemporary resort and residential work uses lava rock, coral stone, ipe and other durable hardwoods, and extensive glazing opened to trade winds. Salt and UV exposure are severe, so material selection is functional and should be rendered as specified.

A markup you send at the end of your working day in Honolulu is picked up as our day begins, so a revision round costs you a night rather than a working day. Is it true that north elevations get direct sun in Hawaii?

Yes, and it catches mainland-trained designers out regularly. Between roughly May and July the sun tracks north of vertical at these latitudes, so north-facing glazing takes direct sun. We model the real solar path, which sometimes changes shading decisions late in a project.

How do you render a lanai properly?

As an inhabited room rather than a dark recess. We light the bounce off the deck and ceiling, model the overhang at true solar altitude, and show the transition to interior — because the lanai is usually the most important space in a Hawaiian house.

Can you render lava rock accurately?

Yes. Lava rock is dark, porous and irregular, and it reads very differently from a generic dark stone — the surface eats light rather than reflecting it. We model coursing and surface irregularity at the visible scale.

Do you show cross-ventilation?

We can, through open louvres and jalousies, aligned openings and diagrams indicating trade-wind direction. Since airflow is the reason for much of the form, showing it makes the render explain the design rather than just depict it.
