Michigan light, rendered accurately.

Michigan is surrounded by the Great Lakes and that governs its light, its snow and much of its architecture. Lakeshore projects get bright reflected light, dune landscapes and exposure; the Upper Peninsula is genuinely northern with heavy snow and a very low winter sun. Detroit is a dense industrial city with an exceptional stock of early-twentieth-century buildings. Winters are long, grey and snowy; summers mild and bright.

Detroit noon sun reaches about 71° in June and 25° in December; the Upper Peninsula drops nearer 21°. Lake reflectance is the distinctive condition, lifting shaded elevations and soffits substantially on shoreline sites.

Lake-effect cloud produces extended flat overcast through winter with almost no directional shadow. Summer lakeshore air is clear and bright with strong reflected glare off water and dune sand.

Detroit holds a remarkable inheritance of Art Deco towers, brick industrial plants and substantial masonry commercial blocks, much of it now in adaptive reuse — a major project type. Residential stock in the older cities is brick bungalow and foursquare. Lakeshore building around Traverse City and the west coast runs to cedar shingle, board-and-batten, metal roofs and large glazing oriented at the water, with a strong contemporary market. The Upper Peninsula uses heavy timber, local stone and steep metal roofs for snow shed. Barn and orchard structures are common in the agricultural belt.

Do you model reflected light off the Great Lakes?

Yes. Lake reflectance lifts shaded elevations, soffits and deck undersides considerably on shoreline sites. We model the water as a real reflective surface, which is what gives a Michigan lakeshore render its particular brightness.

Can you render heavy snow conditions?

We can, and in the Upper Peninsula it is the honest default. Snow accumulated on roof planes, drifted against walls and cleared from circulation changes how the building reads for a large part of the year.

Do you handle Detroit industrial conversions?

Yes, and it is one of the state's largest project types. We model existing brick, steel sash glazing, sawtooth roofs and heavy structure from survey, then place new work against them so the layers stay readable.

Can you render dune landscapes accurately?

We can. Lake Michigan dune sand is pale and highly reflective, and dune grass has a distinctive habit. Both are modelled, since they define what a west-Michigan shoreline image looks like.
