New Mexico has arguably the most distinctive light in the country — high altitude, very dry air and remarkable clarity produce a quality that has drawn painters for a century. Santa Fe sits above 7,000 feet, so despite a southern latitude it gets real snow and cold nights alongside intense sun. Shadows are hard and deeply saturated, the sky reads a deep blue, and the low sun in winter rakes across adobe walls in a way that is central to how the architecture works.
Albuquerque noon sun reaches roughly 79° in June and 32° in December, but altitude is what defines the light: thin dry air gives extremely hard shadow edges and high contrast. Deep window reveals in thick walls create strong shadow that is the architecture's primary modelling device.

Pueblo Revival is the base language — thick earth-toned stucco walls with rounded parapets and soft corners, exposed vigas projecting through walls, canales, deep window reveals, and flat roofs behind parapets. Territorial style adds brick coping and painted wood trim with more classical detail. Adobe and rammed earth are used as genuine mass construction. Wall thickness and reveal depth are the entire visual character, so a render that treats walls as thin planes fails immediately regardless of colour.

We can, and in Santa Fe the distinction is consequential. Pueblo Revival has rounded parapets and soft corners; Territorial adds brick coping and painted classical trim. Review boards there care about the difference.
How do you render the high-desert light quality?
By modelling the altitude honestly. Thin dry air at 5,000 to 7,000 feet gives very hard shadow edges, high contrast and a deep saturated sky. Warm low-angle light against earth-toned stucco is the characteristic condition and worth rendering deliberately.
