Oregon light, rendered accurately.

Oregon splits sharply at the Cascades. West of the range — Portland, the Willamette Valley, the coast — is wet, green and overcast for much of the year, and diffuse light is the honest default rather than an alternative. East of the Cascades is high desert, dry and clear with hard shadows and cold nights. The coast is rugged, wet and windy. Rendering Oregon well means committing to overcast conditions rather than treating them as a compromise.

Portland noon sun reaches roughly 68° in June and 21° in December, and cloud cover means direct sun is often absent entirely for weeks in winter. Diffuse overcast light shows material colour and texture accurately and is genuinely representative west of the Cascades.

Persistent marine and frontal overcast west of the Cascades gives soft shadowless light and deeply saturated greens. Coastal fog and rain are frequent; east of the range air is dry and clear with hard shadows.

Materials local practices specify.

Pacific Northwest regional modernism is a genuine and well-developed tradition here: exposed timber structure, wood cladding, low-slope or shed roofs, deep overhangs for rain protection, and large glazing that works under grey light. Douglas fir and cedar are used seriously as structure and finish, and mass timber has real traction in Portland commercial work. Older stock includes Craftsman bungalows and brick commercial blocks. The coast runs to weathered cedar, metal roofs and wind-braced forms. East of the Cascades shifts to high-desert building in stone, stucco and metal with a very different palette.

Should an Oregon render be sunny or overcast?

Overcast is more honest west of the Cascades, and we usually produce it as the primary view. Diffuse light shows material colour and texture accurately, and it is what the building will actually look like for a large part of the year. We supply a sunny variant alongside.

Can you render mass timber convincingly?

Yes, and it is a real Portland market. CLT and glulam have visible lamination lines, specific grain and a warmth that dominates an interior. We model the layup rather than applying a flat wood texture, since the lamination is the character.

How do you handle deep overhangs?

As rain protection first. In western Oregon overhangs exist to keep water off walls and glazing, so we model their real depth and show the shadow and shelter they provide rather than treating them as a styling gesture.

Do you distinguish east and west of the Cascades?

Completely. Bend is high desert with hard clear light, dry palettes and cold nights; Portland is wet and diffuse with saturated greens. They need different lighting, different landscape and different material treatment.
