West Virginia light, rendered accurately.

West Virginia is the most mountainous state in the east, and terrain governs everything. Almost no site is flat, so retaining, stepped foundations, switchback access and cut-and-fill are design problems that must appear in the render. Narrow valleys mean sites lose direct sun early and gain it late, and river fog is a genuine daily condition in the hollows. Winters are cold with real snow at elevation.

June noon sun reaches about 73°, December near 27°, but valley walls override this routinely — a hollow site can be shaded by mid-afternoon under a clear sky. Terrain is built as real geometry so that shading is truthful.

Morning valley and river fog is frequent and often persists into late morning. Summer humidity softens ridgeline distance, and layered atmospheric haze fades successive ridges.

Building here is practical, terrain-driven and modest in scale. Simple gable forms, metal roofs for snow shed, board-and-batten and clapboard siding, and stone or block foundations stepping down slopes are the norm. There is a strong porch culture — deep front porches facing the valley view are near-universal in the residential stock. Company-town housing rows remain a visible part of the fabric in the coal counties. Newer resort and second-home work around the eastern highlands runs to heavy timber, stone bases and large gable glazing oriented to a view, and adaptive reuse of brick industrial and civic buildings is active in the river towns.

Can you show cut, fill and retaining on a steep site?

Yes, and in West Virginia it is usually essential. We model the existing and proposed grade so retaining walls, stepped foundations and access switchbacks read correctly. A building drawn on flat ground tells a client nothing useful here.

Do you model how many hours of sun a hollow site actually gets?

We do. Valley walls can shade a site by mid-afternoon on a clear day. Building the terrain as geometry lets us show real direct-sun hours, which often drives orientation and glazing decisions.

Can you render valley fog?

Yes. Morning river and valley fog is a daily condition in much of the state and often the most evocative view of a project. We render it as a volumetric condition rather than a flat overlay.

Do you handle deep porches properly?

Porches are the centre of most West Virginia houses, so we light them correctly — modelling the bounce off decking and ceiling so the porch reads as habitable rather than as a dark recess.
