Wyoming light, rendered accurately.

Wyoming is the highest, emptiest and windiest state in the lower forty-eight, and wind is a genuine design determinant rather than a footnote. Most of the state is high plains and basin at 6,000 to 7,000 feet with severe exposure; the Tetons and Absarokas give dramatic alpine terrain. Winters are long and bitterly cold with heavy drifting; summers are short, dry and brilliantly clear. Buildings here look sited or they look abandoned.

Jackson noon sun reaches roughly 69° in June and 21° in December, and at 6,000-plus feet the thin dry air gives extremely hard shadows and high contrast. Teton terrain overrides solar geometry entirely on valley sites.

Exceptionally clear dry air with sight lines of many miles and very hard shadow edges. Blowing and drifting snow is a defining winter condition; summer light is intense with deep saturated skies.

Jackson Hole supports one of the most accomplished mountain-modern markets in the country — reclaimed timber, local stone, weathering steel, dark metal roofs and very large glazing framing the Teton range, executed to a high standard under strict local design review. Elsewhere the state is ranch country: barns, loafing sheds, metal buildings, board-and-batten and simple gables in tight wind-sheltered groupings. Historic towns hold modest brick commercial blocks. Wind drives real decisions — building orientation, entry protection, drift management and the absence of fragile detail all read visually in a render.

A markup you send at the end of your working day in Jackson is picked up as our day begins, so a revision round costs you a night rather than a working day. Does wind exposure show up in a render?

It does, more than clients expect. Orientation, sheltered entries, windbreak planting, drift patterns and the absence of fragile detailing all read visually. On a Wyoming site those cues are what make a building look sited rather than dropped in.

Do you frame the Teton range accurately?

Yes. We build the actual terrain from elevation data so the view through the glazing is the real skyline from your site. In Jackson that view is usually the organising idea of the entire house.

Can you show drifting snow?

We can, and here it is genuinely useful. Drift accumulation against walls and across approaches drives entry placement and snow-storage planning, so showing it makes the render a design tool rather than just a picture.

How do you handle high-altitude light?

At 6,000 to 7,000 feet the air is thin and dry, giving very hard shadow edges, strong contrast and deeply saturated skies. We light for that rather than for a sea-level atmosphere, which otherwise looks flat and washed out.
