Interior Backplates for Product Compositing

[ 02 ]  The brief

An empty interior built and lit specifically as a backplate — a reusable room into which products can be composited without re-rendering the environment each time. Walnut panelling, a black vertical slat wall, a floating lacquered credenza, large-format stone floor tiles and a hazy city view through corner glazing. Backplates are a quiet efficiency: get the lighting, reflections and floor perspective right once, and a manufacturer can drop an entire season’s range into the same convincing room.

[ 04 ]  How it was made

The technical problem.

A backplate is an investment in everything that comes after it. The room is built and lit once, then a manufacturer can composite an entire range into it without paying to re-render an environment each time. That only works if the setup is rigorous: we record exact camera position, lens focal length and sensor size, so a product added later sits in correct perspective rather than approximately. Floor reflections and shadow catchers are rendered as separate passes, which lets a product cast a real shadow and pick up a real reflection in the stone tile when it is dropped in. Lighting was kept deliberately neutral in colour temperature so it flatters a wide range of product finishes rather than only warm timber or only cool metal. The walnut panelling and black slat wall give the frame character without dominating whatever is placed in it.
